More than thirty years ago, I knew Bordeaux. Burgundy was another world entirely. As I began travelling through the region and learning its vineyards, two Beaune Premier Crus played an important role in making Burgundy finally click for me: - Bouchard Père & Fils Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus @Artémis_Domaines - Joseph Drouhin Clos des Mouches @maisonjosephdrouhin Neither is a Grand Cru. But both showed me how two neighbouring Burgundy vineyards, planted to the same grape, could produce completely different personalities. More than thirty years later, I still buy both. Everyone wanted the 2000 Bordeaux vintage. I bought 2001 instead. At the time, that probably looked like a strange decision. The legendary 2000 vintage had captured the attention of collectors around the world, while 2001 arrived with much less excitement and significantly lower release prices. But I saw something I liked. The wines were fresher, more restrained and more classical in style. And after more than thirty years of collecting Bordeaux, those are qualities I have always valued. So in spring 2002, I bought several cases of 2001 Bordeaux en primeur. Twenty-five years later, I can finally ask: was that contrarian decision actually a good one?
